Il cuore del Pollino! The hearth of Pollino!

 

San Severino Lucano is the most important town of the Pollino National Park, the biggest natural park in the South of Italy famous for its uncontaminated flora and the preservation of a rich fauna. Walks, trekking, climbing, rafting, orienteering, etc. are some of the activities you can make under the high picks of the Dolcedorme (2267 meters) and Monte Pollino (2248 m.).

 

  

San Severino Lucano is a lovable town ideal to relax, study, meet  welcoming people and eat excellent food. Among the old streets, the stone houses and palaces you will feel like in peace and regenerated.

From San Severino Lucano you can go up to the Pollino Mountains through the woods of beech and pine trees, accompanied by the sound of streams and rivers and the view of eagles, wood pecker, hares, etc. Under the peak of the Pollino Mountains it is possible to see and touch the Pino Loricato, a special tree from the Ice Age which exists only in this area of Italy and in the Balkans.

 

Guided excursions by foot, in Land Rover, on a horse or in a Mountain Bike will allow you to enjoy this wonderful uncontaminated and relaxing place. There is also the possibility of doing the rock climbing as well as cross-country skiing in the winter time.

San Severino Lucano became an international attraction also thanks to the

"RB Ride", the work made by the famous Belgian-Swedish artist Carsten Höller. It's a carousel situated on the top of the Timpa della Guardia, with 24 seats from which people can see the amazing landscape of the Pollino Mountain while the the RB Ride moves in a very slaw way. The installation is part of the project Arteppolino promoted by the Region Basilicata, the Italian Government, The European Union, and the Foundation of the Venice Biennale.

 

While in San Severino you can visit the old water mill of the Valle Frido, the popular Sanctuary of the Madonna del Pollino and the Museum of the Art craft products of Borgo di Mezzana. 

The town offers all year round numerous sagre, traditional festival with the typical food, music and dance. In the month of August you can assist to the representation of the one-week ethno music festival called "Etno-Pollino".

 

Special 4-Week Combined Program: if you want you can also stay 2 weeks in the mountains of San Severino Lucano and 2 weeks on the sea town of Otranto.
